Missing Shingles

If only a few shingles are gone, try covering the area with a plastic trash bag. Slide one edge of the bag under the shingles about two rows above the affected portion and secure the other edge two rows below, use roofing mastic to seal any exposed nail heads as water can seep in by running down the nails. If you have a large area of missing shingles which has exposed the felt paper, or even worse the roof sheathing, a water proof tarp should be used, or call Purofirst Fire and Water Restoration if you do not feel safe climbing up on the roof.

The emergency steps that need to be taken is:

• Do not switch on any ceiling fixture or fan if the ceiling is wet.
• Do not use your regular household vacuum cleaner to remove water.
• Do not use TVs, radios, computers or any electrical appliance while standing on wet carpets or floors, particularly concrete or tile floors.
• Avoid rooms where ceilings sag due to a buildup of water.
• Punch small holes in sagging ceilings to relieve trapped water. Be sure to place drip pans underneath and move any nearby furniture or household items.
• Place aluminum foil, wood blocks or saucers between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
• Open, but do not force, drawers and cabinet doors to dry out interiors.
• Dry all garments as soon as possible. Hang fur and leather goods to dry at room temperature.
• Pick up any books, magazines, shoes or other items that may be sitting on a wet rug or floor.
• Remove paintings and other artwork to safe, dry place.
